MPFA event for parents and their children to learn money management skills
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (16 February) organized an event on money management for kindergarten kids and their parents. Guest speakers, including a financial commentator and a financial planner, shared their tips with parents on coaching their children to develop a proper attitude towards wealth management. A money management workshop was also organized for the children.
The event was one of the programmes on money management organized by the MPFA this year. It received an enthusiastic response, attracting more than 300 parents and their children. Addressing the participants, MPFA Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Cheng Yan-chee said, “We encourage parents to take the lead and become role models for their children in managing their wealth, including taking good care of their MPF to be well-prepared for their retirement.”
The MPFA invited as guest speakers Agnes Wu, a financial commentator, Alvin Lam, a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong, and Derek Yeung, Headmaster of Po Leung Kuk Camoes Tan Siu Lin Primary School. They shared their experience in children’s financial education, explained the concept of family budgeting, talked about how to manage MPF accounts and investments, and gave some parenting tips. The guest speakers also answered questions on family financial planning and child coaching raised by the participants during the interactive forum session.
In addition to the seminar, a money management workshop was organized for the children, aimed at educating them on concepts such as saving, spending and donating, and conveying messages such as “save before you spend”.
Every year, the MPFA organizes various programmes on money management for students at the kindergarten, primary, secondary and tertiary levels to disseminate messages on sound money management and promote the importance of saving for the future. Apart from these programmes, the MPFA has been offering investor education to scheme members through a variety of channels. It has recently produced six episodes of a video series that introduces topics on MPF investment in a light-hearted manner. The public can watch the videos on the new YouTube channel, MPFA TV.
