Expert answers common financial management questions in new MPFA Financial Planning cum MPF Workshop for tertiary students
Should I apply for a loan to pay for my tuition fees? What should my priority be after graduation – buying a flat or going on to further studies? These are some common financial management questions of tertiary students.
Our financial needs change as we go through different stages of life. To achieve our dream, we must first learn how to manage our money. To deepen tertiary students’ and young working adults’ understanding of the proper attitude to financial management and financial planning, the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) plans to organize over 10 workshops covering financial planning and the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF). Experts will teach the participating young people how to better plan for their lives and retirement.
The first workshop for tertiary students was held today (13 October) at Hong Kong Baptist University. It was hosted by veteran financial analyst Edmond Lee, who is also an expert in financial education. Mr Lee used case studies, discussions and a Q&A session to help tertiary students understand their actual financial needs and the basic concepts of financial planning. The participants went through the MPF scheme enrolment process and practised designing their own investment portfolio. MPF messages and advice on achieving financial goals were shared in a light-hearted and interactive way.
Many participants found the workshop useful, as it deepened their understanding of the MPF System and retirement planning. After participating in the workshop, they realized that the MPF is a long-term investment, and if they manage their MPF carefully when they are young, they will have better retirement protection.
Apart from combined financial planning and MPF workshops, the MPFA will hold tours at some 10 tertiary institutions to publicize MPF messages. Through interactive activities and social media promotions, MPF messages will be disseminated in a light-hearted manner.
The MPFA will also join different job fairs held by various organizations and tertiary institutions this academic year. The MPFA will set up consultation booths and information boards, hold talks, organize social media activities and distribute information booklets to enhance tertiary students’ knowledge of MPF investment management.
