MPFA outreach activities encourage construction workers to get “casual employee card” and actively manage MPF
Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) Industry Schemes Committee Chairman Dr Roy Chung Chi-pang, Chairman of the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union Mr Chow Luen-kiu, and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and Executive Director of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) Mr Cheng Yan-chee, today (28 December) visited a construction site in Nam Cheong to remind the workers to get a “casual employee card”, properly manage their MPF accounts, and to draw their attention to the coming launch of Default Investment Strategy (DIS).
The construction and catering industries have high labour mobility with many “casual employees” employed on a day-to-day basis or for a period of less than 60 days. The MPF Industry Schemes (IS) are designed for these two industries whose employers can choose to enrol in the IS. Employees who open casual employee accounts with the two IS trustees will be given a “casual employee card”. Employers can make contributions for these employees through the account number or the casual employee number printed on the “casual employee card”. As at the end of November 2016, over 580,000 employers, employees and self-employed persons were registered under the IS.
As part of the MPFA outreach programme, MPFA representatives held a talk for the construction workers on the site to introduce the IS and to highlight the importance of actively managing their MPF accounts. The workers were urged to check and update their personal particulars with the trustees, especially their current address, and to apply for the “casual employee card”. They were also briefed on the features and impact of the DIS, which will be launched on 1 April 2017. The MPFA staff helped the members check the information on their personal accounts. Representatives of the two trustees were also present to help workers open IS accounts, which would facilitate their future employers to make contributions.
The MPF is an important part of employees’ retirement protection. The MPFA encourages employees in the construction and catering industries to get a “casual employee card” and actively manage their MPF accounts.
