MPFA donates food to People’s Food Bank to help the grassroots cope with their immediate needs
The epidemic has greatly affected the livelihood of grassroots workers, and support from the community is essential to help them cope with their immediate needs. In light of this, the MPFA Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee collaborated with St. James’ Settlement (SJS) to raise donations from MPFA staff for purchasing food for the People’s Food Bank of SJS to assist persons in need.
MPFA Acting Managing Director Mr Cheng Yan-chee said, “The MPFA is committed to assisting the working population of Hong Kong, especially grassroots workers, to build up basic retirement protection through MPF. We are gravely concerned about the challenges faced by grassroots people during the epidemic. To this end, colleagues of MPFA voluntarily raised money for this cause, showcasing their commitment to ‘Community Perspective’ which is one of MPFA’s core values, to help persons in need to meet their basic needs of everyday life.”
With the donation raised by MPFA CSR Committee, the charitable food bank would purchase nutritious, easy-to-store food according to the needs of grassroots people, including 480 kg of rice, 1,680 packs of noodles, 1,680 cans of food, 240 packs of cereal, 240 bottles of cooking oil, and 960 packs of biscuits for donation. It is estimated that 240 persons will benefit from the food aid sufficient for a week.
The People’s Food Bank is a non-profit organization which provides short-term food assistance to persons who may not be able to pay for daily food expenses, such as low-income groups and the unemployed. The People’s Food Bank provides free food assistance, including rice, noodles, canned food and cereal, to eligible applicants according to their needs.
Mr Jonathan Ho, Co-Chairman of MPFA CSR Committee, and volunteers representing the MPFA donate the food to the People’s Food Bank on 13 April, which was received by Ms Connie Ng, Senior Manager of Charity Services of SJS.
