A record 1,900-plus organizations received Good MPF Employer Award 2021-22

The MPFA held the Good MPF Employer Award (GMEA) 2021-22 Presentation Ceremony today (6 October). Now in its 8th consecutive year since launch in 2015, this year’s GMEA adopted the theme “You are EXTRAordinary!” to recognize exemplary employers who strived to protect and enhance the retirement benefits of their employees. This year, a total of 1,903 companies and organizations received the award, which was a record and a 9% increase over that of last year. Among them, 17% or 321 companies and organizations were first-time participants, indicating that a growing number of employers value the importance of retirement protection for their employees.

The GMEA presentation ceremony, held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with a live webcast, was officiated by Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr Chris Sun Yuk-han, Commissioner for Labour Ms May Chan Wing-shiu, MPFA Chairman Mrs Ayesha Macpherson Lau and Managing Director Mr Cheng Yan-chee.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr Chris Sun Yuk-han said in his speech, “The business environment in the past year has been very challenging. While fighting the pandemic, the employers who received the ‘Good MPF Employer Award’ this year did not forget to take an extra step for the retirement well-being of their employees. This is indeed worthy of encouragement and praise. I expect more organisations could become ‘Good MPF Employer’ with a view to strengthening the MPF System to better perform its retirement protection function.”

In her welcome remarks, MPFA Chairman Mrs Ayesha Macpherson Lau said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has affected Hong Kong for nearly 3 years, and it has not been easy to be an employer during this period. Nonetheless, a record-breaking 1,903 employers fulfilled all the criteria and were commended amidst the challenging business environment, reflecting their commitment to ‘walk through thick and thin’ together with their employees. An employer with good business acumen is essential to running a successful company, but it is equally important to have employees who are willing to give their best to the company. This is the prerequisite for a win-win relationship between employers and employees.”

Mrs Lau also mentioned that it takes over 40 years to develop a mature retirement protection system. The MPF System has been operating for almost 22 years, which is at the midway point in the journey to maturity. Going forward, the MPFA will continue to introduce more enhancement measures on scheme member protection and system reform to provide better retirement protection for the working population.

In conjunction with the ceremony, a sharing session was held in which guest speakers shared innovative ideas about business transformation. The MPFA also interacted with both on-site and online participants, and introduced a “win-win strategy” of MPF management, as well as the latest development progress update of the eMPF Platform.

The aim of the annual GMEA programme is to encourage employers to fulfil their MPF responsibilities and recognize employers who are exemplary in enhancing the retirement benefits of their employees. Since its launch in 2015, nearly 2,800 employers, employing a total of about 250,000 people, have been recognized as Good MPF Employers. The programme had two special awards this year – “Good MPF Employer 5 years+” and “Best All-round MPF Employer” – to commend employers that have made continuous efforts to provide better retirement protection for their employees over the years. There are also other awards including the “e-Contribution Award” and the “MPF Support Award”, which recognize companies and organizations that have adopted digital services for MPF administration, and/or that are committed to helping their employees manage their MPF proactively.
