MPFA storybook explains money management concepts Acting competition reinforces knowledge of financial management
Learning proper money management concepts is crucial for kids. This academic year, the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) has produced a new storybook on money management The MPF Cake and distributed more than 100,000 copies of it to about 70% of kindergarten kids in Hong Kong in over 500 kindergartens. All kindergartens in Hong Kong have also been invited to join an acting competition, in which the kids will play a drama based on the story in the book in a bid to reinforce their knowledge of money management.
Ten kindergartens have made it through to the finale of the acting competition, and the MPFA has organised workshops conducted by a professional drama troupe for the 10 finalist teams since November. Through interactive games, the children are learning acting skills and money management concepts to prepare for their performance in the finale.
In the workshops, participating kids had to enact a short drama based on an extract from the storybook. It features three little apprentices having to go somewhere to look for ingredients for a cake and to equip themselves for the journey, they go to a market, where they have to choose between buying necessities or non-essential items. The story aims to help kids distinguish “wants” from “needs”.
The finale-cum-prize presentation-ceremony will be held on 2 February 2013. Heidi Chu, a mother and renowned artiste, will present the awards and share her experience and tips on coaching kids how to develop a proper attitude towards money management.
The MPFA has designed The MPF Cake to present money management concepts in a lively and interesting manner so that kids can have a basic understanding of working, saving, spending and offering. To cater for the needs of parents and teachers, the storybook also has a dedicated chapter on MPF management and investment.
Children’s song on financial management
In addition to the storybook and the acting competition, the MPFA invited singer -songwriter KellyJackie to write a song to convey the money management concepts through the lyrics so that the kids learn about the concepts through singing the song.
Members of the public are welcome to visit the thematic website to learn more about the storybook, the children’s song and details of the acting competition.
To educate young children and teenagers about the concept of “saving for the future” and to disseminate MPF messages to their families, the MPFA has been organising various youth programmes on money management. Members of the public are welcome to visit the Youth Corner on the MPFA website to learn more about the series of youth education programmes organised by the MPFA during this academic year.
