MPFA acting competition promotes money management skills

The final round of a kindergarten children's acting competition themed on money management and a prize presentation ceremony organised by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) were held today (25 February). Many parents came along and cheered their kids on, which filled the event with laughter and heart-warming moments. The MPFA also invited a financial education expert and a daddy artiste to be guest speakers to share their experience and tips on children's financial education.

The MPFA earlier produced a storybook on money management entitled Adventure on Treasure Island, of which 90,000 copies were distributed to some 650 local kindergartens or 75% of the total. The storybook helps teachers and parents teach kindergarten kids about money management fundamentals. The kindergartens were invited to join an acting competition to demonstrate their creativity by producing a short play based on the storybook. Ten kindergartens were shortlisted to participate in today's event, which was the grand finale of the MPFA's financial education programmes organised for kindergarten kids for the current academic year.

The children, all dressed up, brought to the audience the thrill of the adventurous journey that the three storybook characters took and presented the four basic concepts of money management: working, spending, saving and donating. After the engaging performances, the MPFA arranged talks for parents on children's financial education, with Moses Lui, an expert on children's financial education, and Raymond Cho, a father and artiste, sharing their experience and tips on teaching children how to develop a proper attitude towards money management.

At the end of the event, the MPFA presented a number of prizes to winners of both the acting competition and the Adventure on Treasure Island Online Parenting Photo Competition held earlier.

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, MPFA Executive Director (Supervision) Cynthia Hui said it was never too early for parents to help their children devise a practical and effective savings plan, and set appropriate money management goals. "We hope that these young kids will start developing the habit of saving and making good use of their money. The earlier they start managing their wealth, the more they will benefit," she added.

To educate children and teenagers about the concept of saving for the future and to make them aware of the importance of planning for a secure future, the MPFA has been organising various programmes on money management, which also disseminate the MPF message to their families. Children from the winning kindergarten, Christian Little Tree Kindergarten, give a brilliant performance. Through a short play based on the storybook Adventure on Treasure Island, the participating teams in the acting competition presented to the audience the four basic concepts of money management: working, spending, saving and donating.
