Young children learn money management fundamentals through MPFA acting competition

The final round of a kindergarten children’s acting competition themed on money management and a prize presentation ceremony organised by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) were held today (2 February). The young actors put great effort into their performances, cheered on by enthusiastic parents, filling the event with heart-warming moments. The MPFA had invited Heidi Chu, a mother and renowned artiste, to be one of the judges, and she also shared how she coached her young child to develop proper money management habits.

The MPFA earlier produced a storybook on money management, The MPF Cake, of which 100,000 copies were distributed to about 70% of kindergarten kids in Hong Kong in over 500 kindergartens. The kindergartens were invited to join the acting competition to demonstrate their creativity by producing a short play based on the storybook and to learn the money management concepts conveyed in the book. The 10 best performing kindergartens were shortlisted to participate in today’s event, putting their young performers in the running for prizes such as best actor/actress, best costume and best teamwork.

The children, dressed up in costumes made on their own, brought to the audience the journey the three storybook characters took to look for cake-making ingredients and presented the four basic concepts of money management: working, saving, spending, and donating.

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, MPFA Executive Director (Supervision) Cynthia Hui encouraged parents to help their children devise a practical and effective savings plan, and set appropriate money management goals. “We hope that parents can become a role model for their children by properly managing their MPF investments,” she added.

To educate young children and teenagers about the concept of “saving for the future” and to disseminate MPF messages to their families, the MPFA has been organising various youth programmes on money management. Members of the public are welcome to visit the Youth Corner on the MPFA website to learn more about the series of youth education programmes organised by the MPFA for this academic year.

The brilliant performance of the children from TWGHs Ko Teck Kin Memorial Kindergarten won them “the winning team” award in the acting competition. Through their creative drama performance of the storybook, the teams presented the four basic concepts of money management: working, saving, spending, and donating.
