Good MPF Employer Award 2019-20 Record Number of Employers Commended

The MPFA today (30 September) announced the results of the annual Good MPF Employer Award (GMEA). Despite the COVID-19 pandemic this year, there are 1,671 employers receiving the award, the highest number since the launch of GMEA six years ago, showing that employers attach great importance to retirement protection for their employees in both good and difficult times.

This year’s GMEA award presentation ceremony was replaced by an online announcement on the awardees in view of the pandemic. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong and Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui, as well as MPFA Chairman Dr David Wong, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director Alice Law, and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and Executive Director Cheng Yan-chee congratulated the Good MPF Employers in a pre-recorded video.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Dr Law Chi-kwong said that employees are employers’ most valuable assets and that enhancing retirement protection is conducive to fostering a harmonious employer–employee relationship. Dr Law encouraged employers and employees to stand together to ride out the difficult times.

Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui expressed support for the Good MPF Employer Award, citing in particular the “e-Contribution Award” which was in line with the eMPF Platform, which he said was complementing the eMPF Platform currently under development. With more employers adopting electronic tools to handle MPF, he believed the efficiency and accuracy of managing MPF would be significantly enhanced and that it would also facilitate a smooth transition to the eMPF Platform in the future.

Apart from the “e-Contribution Award” and the “MPF Support Award”, the MPFA introduced two new awards this year. A total of 356 organizations that had participated in the Good MPF Employer scheme for six consecutive years received “the Good MPF Employer 6 Years Award”. Among them, 41 organizations were honoured with “the Best All-round MPF Employer” Award, as they also fulfilled the following four criteria: offering more than one MPF scheme to employees, offering MPF voluntary contributions for their employees, receiving the e-Contribution Award, and receiving the MPF Support Award.

MPFA Chairman Dr David Wong said that the aim of the Good MPF Employer Award was to promote and foster employers’ compliance with MPF legislation and recognize employers who were exemplary in enhancing the retirement benefits of their employees. He added, “Even though the city’s economy has been under the impact of the social movement and pandemic in the past year, we have a record number of awardees. Despite the uncertain outlook, many employers are still willing to go the extra mile for their employees by enhancing their retirement protection. They definitely deserve the Award!”
