Employers reminded to provide employees with pay-records

Employers are reminded that they are required by law to provide each of their employees with a monthly pay-record within seven working days after MPF contributions are made.

Executive Director of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA), Mrs Diana Chan, issued the reminder at a press briefing on the MPFA’s Call Centre this (February 1) afternoon.

“Employers have to ensure that their monthly pay-records contain information such as the amount of relevant income payable during the month, amount of both mandatory and voluntary contributions made by employers, amount of both mandatory and voluntary contributions made by employees and the date on which contributions are paid,” said Mrs Chan.

Employers who fail to do so will be subject to a financial penalty of $10,000 for the first instance. The amount of financial penalty will be doubled for the second failure.

“Every time they receive pay-records from their employers, employees should check whether the amount of contribution is correct. In case of doubt, they can always approach our Call Centre for assistance. They may also seek clarification with their employers or their trustees,” Mrs Chan said.

With employers and employees starting to make MPF contributions in February, Mrs Chan envisaged that the number of enquiries and complaints relating to contributions would go up in the coming few months.

In order to handle public enquiries in an efficient and expeditious manner, the MPFA has set up a Call Centre since early 2000. The Centre has so far handled over 270,000 telephone enquiries and 3,000 written enquiries.

Staffed by full-time community relation assistants, the Centre now has 100 telephone lines. It opens from 8.30 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 8.30 am to 1 pm on Saturdays.

“Employers and employees are encouraged to make good use of our hotline service. We stand ready to provide assistance and information as and when necessary,” added Mrs Chan.
