Over 650 organizations receive the Good MPF Employer Award

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (8 October) announced that 653 organizations have received the 2014/15 Good MPF Employer Award.

The organizations come from different industries, including finance, construction, education, transportation, trading, property management, tourism and catering, and are estimated to employ over 120,000 employees overall. Over 60% of the organizations are small-to-medium-sized enterprises employing fewer than 100 people, and 38 are big employers with more than 1,000 staff each. The awardee list is at the annex.

Of the awardees, 88% offer one additional retirement protection benefit and the other 12% offer two or more additional benefits. In terms of types of benefits offered, 94% of Good MPF Employers make voluntary contributions for their employees; 15% offer more than one Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme for their staff to choose from; 10% offer both additional benefits for their staff. Some awardees offer a total of three MPF schemes for their employees to choose from.

Over 500 guests attended today’s award presentation ceremony, whose guest of honour was Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung Kin-chung. Other guests included representatives of the awardees, supporting organizations of the Award and the MPF industry.

Speaking at the award presentation ceremony, MPFA Chairman Dr David Wong said, “Under the MPF System, employers play an indispensable role. Our Good MPF Employer Award was launched to publicly recognize exemplary employers who not only duly discharge their MPF obligations, but also go the extra mile in offering more retirement benefits than legally required.”

He said, “The response to the first Good MPF Employer Award has been impressive, with over 650 organizations receiving the Award. We find this very encouraging.”

“It clearly shows that many employers in Hong Kong care about the retirement protection of their staff, dispelling the notion some may have that Hong Kong bosses are interested only in making money,” Dr Wong added.

He said, “I very much look forward to seeing a growing number of employers receiving the Good MPF Employer Award in the coming years.”

Dr Wong thanked employer associations and labour unions for supporting and publicizing the Award and the MPF trustees for launching reward programmes to encourage their MPF clients to join the programme.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung Kin-chung said, “Harmonious employer-employee relations are key to the success of a company and also the driving force behind Hong Kong’s economic development. The Hong Kong SAR Government fully supports the MPFA in commending these ‘good bosses’ through this annual award which helps foster positive energy in the community. ”

The Good MPF Employer Award, launched this year, will be an annual award. It seeks to promote and foster employers’ compliance with MPF legislation; encourage employers to provide better retirement benefits for their employees; and recognize employers who are exemplary in enhancing the retirement benefits of their employees.

The 2014/15 Good MPF Employers:
  • will be entitled to use the Award logo on their websites, in promotional materials, on their stationery, in their advertisements, etc., until 30 September 2016;
  • will have their names listed on the MPFA website for viewing by members of the public; and
  • will be entitled to early-bird enrolment for MPFA events and seminars on MPF investment and MPF account management.
